This system was manufactured by ISI ( International Scientific Instruments ) as a "MiniSEM" to fill the high demand for a quick, easy-to-use SEM that could perform with a minimum of maintenance and with very limited training for operators. The system consists of a vacuum chamber and optics column to provide a finely focused electron beam at energies from 2 to 30 KeV and microscope magnifications from about 20X to in excess of 40,000X. They provide moderately high performance and are still a commonly used SEM Worldwide recognized as one of the most productive SEM's made. This particular unit performed very reliably for Advanced R & D for many years with a minimum of maintenance.

SEM ( Scanning Electron Microscopy ) and / or SEM combined with EDS ( Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy ) is one of the fastest and most reliable methods of doing this for small parts where the defects and or contamination might even be on the microscopic level. This may include not only general, wide- spread contaminants but also inclusions, layers pits, scratches, burrs, fibers, particles, and other extraneous characteristics of parts. It can also play a major role in monitoring or measuring the physical characteristic of small parts including layer thicknesses, dimensional analysis, uniformity, surface finish, etc.
